The Year Ahead

As the school year comes to a close, we are now looking to the year ahead.  Over the next few weeks, our leadership staff will begin planning the new year.

The composition of a class is crucial in lesson planning and classroom instruction.  Therefore, we will conduct meetings with teachers in May to place each student in a class based upon the academic and personal needs of each child.  At that time, teachers will be creating classes but teachers will not be assigned to the classes until a later date.  Due to the need to keep a proper balance in each class and the complexities of doing so, we will not be honoring parent requests.  We pride ourselves on having very hard-working and dedicated teachers who work together in lesson planning and classroom instruction.  Through such collaboration, I assure you that your child will receive a great education in any of our classrooms.

Just The Facts

It is our school-wide goal for each child to know their basic math facts by spring CST testing. You can help by taking time to work with your child in memorizing their math facts. We are providing flash cards and ask that you take a few minutes each night to quiz your child on their math facts. Here are a few suggestions:

-Work in a quiet area

-Stay with one set of facts (i.e. addition) until mastered, then start on another set of facts (i.e. subtraction)

Students should have their math facts memorized by April 18, 2008. Students who have met their grade level goal will be able to participate in a field day which includes bounce houses, slides, and other fun activities. Individual classrooms may set up their own form of recognition as well.

Grade Level Goals:

Kindergarten Know numbers 1-100

1st Grade mastery of addition and subtraction facts 1-20

2nd Grade mastery of addition and subtraction facts 1-20

3rd Grade mastery of addition and subtraction facts 1-20

4th Grade mastery of multiplication and division facts 1-12

5th Grade mastery of multiplication and division facts 1-12

*Mastery requires students to finish 100 problems within 5 minutes at 100% accuracy.

Parents + Teachers = Student Success!

See Me Read!

It's a fact of life- children watch what their parents do.  To encourage your kids to read, let them see that you like to read, too.  Try these suggestions:

Make it easy.  Keep good books, magazines, and newspapers around the house for all of you.  You'll give everyone plenty of opportunities to read.

Let's hear it.  Read interesting things aloud:  news stories, funny jokes, a delicious recipe, or words to a song.  You'll boost your kids' excitement for the written word.

Do it.  Let your children see you read for pleasure every day.  You'll set a good example for them to follow.
